A prebiotic is not a live microorganism. It is material that selected microorganisms can use. A probiotic, by contrast, contains specific live microorganisms that meet the scientific criteria for a demonstrated health benefit.

More ingredients do not automatically make a clearer formula

A long ingredient list can look impressive, but the more useful question is simple: what is each ingredient there to do?

We prefer formulas where the roles are easy to understand. If a product combines a prebiotic with another ingredient, you should be able to see which component provides the prebiotic side and which component has the second job. That makes it easier to judge whether the formula suits what you came looking for.

Where pectin fits into the fibre picture

Pectin is a family of structurally complex, non-digestible plant cell-wall polysaccharides. Gut microbes can ferment pectic material, but pectin is not one uniform substance. Its backbone, degree of esterification, branching and attached sugars can vary between sources and preparations.

That detail matters. In a controlled colon-model study of several structurally different pectins, researchers found that pectin structure was linked with different microbial changes and short-chain fatty acid patterns.[2] It was an in vitro study, so it does not tell us that one pectin source will produce the same result in every person. What it does show clearly is why it is too simple to talk about every pectin prebiotic as though it were identical.

Why Our Prebiotic Side Starts With NZ Gold Kiwifruit

We use two NZ-grown kiwifruit ingredients in our formula because they have two different roles.

Each capsule contains 300 mg NZ-grown gold kiwifruit powder, Livaux, and 250 mg NZ-grown green kiwifruit enzyme extract, OxiFend. The serving is two capsules, providing 600 mg gold kiwifruit powder, 500 mg green kiwifruit enzyme extract and 12,500 CDU declared actinidin activity per serving.

We are also careful about what those numbers mean. The 600 mg of gold kiwifruit powder in a serving is the amount of that ingredient, not a claim that the serving contains 600 mg of fibre. This is not a bulk fibre powder.

Livaux has been studied in human capsule research, but dose context matters. A 2017 randomised trial used 2,400 mg Livaux per day, not the 600 mg gold kiwifruit amount in our current daily serving.[3] We therefore do not use that older study as proof that our finished formula will produce the same outcomes. Actinidin research also includes simulated digestion studies rather than a clinical trial of our finished formula.[4] We think the useful case for this product is clearer than that: two well-defined NZ-grown ingredients, two distinct roles, one convenient format.

Current directions are two capsules daily with a glass of water, with or without food. The formula is gluten free and suitable for vegetarians. It contains kiwifruit, and if you are pregnant or lactating, we recommend seeking professional health advice before taking it.
