Blackcurrant Skin Extract

Size: 3 Bottles
  • Kiwi Superfoods Ltd

New Zealand blackcurrants contain more anthocyanin-related compounds than any other commercially available fruit or vegetable - and Kiwi Superfoods Blackcurrant Skin Extract is formulated to deliver their full benefit. Each daily dose provides a minimum of 270mg of NZ-grown blackcurrant skin extract plus 400mg of Vitamin C, with guaranteed levels of anthocyanin-related polyphenols.

New Zealand's pristine conditions, mineral-rich soils, and elevated UV exposure produce blackcurrants with uniquely high anthocyanin content. Some NZ varieties also contain cGP (cyclic glycine-proline), a compound that normalises Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) — low levels of which are linked to neurodegenerative conditions including Parkinson's disease and stroke.

"I am weaning off the antidepressants that I've been on for years and I am feeling terrific! So, that combined with hardly any hot flushes anymore is honestly fantastic, I can't thank you enough. You don't realise how much it means to me to be off the AD's!"

Key benefits

  • Eye health and vision - anthocyanin-related compounds may support clarity of vision and night vision, and we have our own personal experience of this product's benefits on ocular health. See Our Story for more
  • Brain health and mental clarity - anthocyanins can cross the blood-brain barrier, inhibit neuroinflammation, and support healthy synaptic signalling. Auckland University research has confirmed the neuroprotective qualities of NZ blackcurrants
  • Mood support - cGP in NZ blackcurrants helps keep IGF-1 levels balanced, which may explain customer feedback of feeling sharper and experiencing an uplift in mood
  • Muscle recovery - research shows blackcurrants reduce muscle damage and soreness, support tissue repair, and assist immune protection after exercise
  • Circulation and blood pressure - clinical trials show blackcurrants may help reduce high blood pressure, increase HDL (good) cholesterol, and decrease LDL (bad) cholesterol
  • Anti-inflammatory support - studies show increased blackcurrant intake may reduce vascular inflammation and lower risk of cardiovascular disorders
  • Gut health - research suggests blackcurrant extract positively modifies gut microbial populations, enhancing beneficial bacteria and reducing activity of toxic bacterial enzymes
  • Anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties - multiple studies show anthocyanin-related compounds impair virus growth and have demonstrated anti-bacterial activity
  • Antioxidant defence - blackcurrant anthocyanins and anthocyanin-related compounds reduce oxidative stress and are used by several high-performance sports teams for this reason

What makes New Zealand blackcurrants different?

Not all blackcurrant supplements are equal. NZ-grown blackcurrants contain higher anthocyanin levels than those grown elsewhere, thanks to our unique growing conditions. They also contain a complex mix of flavonoids, phytochemicals, and polyphenolics — each with their own positive health contributions — as well as cGP, a compound unique to certain NZ varieties that supports brain health and IGF-1 regulation.

Kiwi Superfoods uses blackcurrant skin extract — the most concentrated source of these compounds — delivering a guaranteed minimum of 270mg per daily dose alongside 400mg of Vitamin C.

What's in each bottle?

  • 60 capsules - one months supply
  • Each capsules contains no less then 270mg NZ grown Blackcurrant skin extract and 400mg of Vitamin C
  • Gluten free, vegan-friendly

How to take

Take 2 capsules daily, with or without food. Blackcurrant skin extract is rich in Vitamin C and anthocyanins, which are water-soluble. Most people tolerate it well on an empty stomach, but taking it with food is fine if preferred.

Please note: Always read the label and use as directed. Vitamins and minerals are supplementary to and not a replacement for a balanced diet. If symptoms persist, see your healthcare professional.

Warning: If pregnant or lactating, seek guidance from your health professional before use. Those taking phenothiazines (a type of anti-psychotic medication) should not take blackcurrant extract as it may increase the risk of seizure. Blackcurrants may slow blood clotting — if you have a bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning medication such as Warfarin, consult your doctor before use. Do not take prior to surgery.

What the research suggests - health benefits of Blackcurrant Skin Extract and Anthocyanin-related compounds may include:

Eye health

Clarity of vision and night vision may be improved through regular consumption of anthocyanins. We have our own personal experience of this product's benefits on both ocular and cognitive health — see Our Story for more.

Brain health and function

Anthocyanins and other flavonoids are thought to work by inhibiting neuroinflammation, activating synaptic signalling, and improving blood flow to the brain.4 Research indicates that some dietary anthocyanins can cross the blood-brain barrier, allowing direct beneficial effects on brain tissue.2,3,7 Exciting research from Auckland University has confirmed the neuroprotective qualities of NZ blackcurrants, including increased cGP in cerebrospinal fluid in Parkinson's patients.

Muscle recovery and immune protection

Research has found that blackcurrants boost the natural benefits of exercise by reducing muscle damage and soreness and assisting immune protection. These benefits are backed by scientific data showing speedier tissue repair, recovery, and performance. Train harder, train longer.1,9

Circulation and blood pressure

Clinical trials with blackcurrants have shown they may aid in the reduction of high blood pressure, as well as increase HDL ("good") cholesterol and decrease LDL ("bad") cholesterol.10

Anti-inflammation

A 2009 study showed that increased intake of blackcurrant and orange juice decreased vascular inflammation and the risk of cardiovascular disorder.9

Gut health

Research increasingly points to gut microbe populations playing a critical role in human health. A study found that blackcurrant extract positively modified gut microbial populations — enhancing the growth of beneficial bacteria and decreasing the activity of toxic bacterial enzymes linked to colon cancer.11
