Blackcurrant Extract vs Powder vs Juice: Which Form Matches the Evidence?

Berry > crushing or pressing > juice separation > filtering or concentration

Pressing separates liquid from much of the solid berry material. Further filtering, clarification or concentration can change the amount of pulp, water, acids and polyphenols in the finished juice. Some products retain more suspended solids than others.

Powder route

Berry or berry material > drying > milling > powder

The starting material matters. Drying whole berries is not the same as drying juice solids or milling pomace. Drying method, temperature, oxygen exposure, storage and added carriers can also affect the finished composition.

Extract route

Selected berry material > extraction > concentration > possible standardisation > finished extract

Extraction is selective. The result depends on the plant part, extraction medium, conditions, purification steps and marker used for standardisation. Two products called blackcurrant extract may therefore be materially different.

Evidence passports: what was actually studied?

A study can be well designed and still be a poor match for the product in front of you. The safest reading method is to record the preparation, plant part, active disclosure, serving basis, participant group, duration and endpoint before discussing what may transfer.

Juice passport

Commercial processing study: Woodward and colleagues followed anthocyanins through a commercial blackcurrant juice-concentrate line. Whole berries moved through milling, enzyme treatment, pressing, pasteurisation, clarification, filtration and concentration. Anthocyanin recovery was measured across processing stages. This was a processing study, not a human trial, so it can inform questions about stability under those conditions but cannot prove a consumer outcome.

Anthocyanin-rich beverage trial: A 2025 randomised crossover trial gave 23 healthy middle-aged adults a 200 mL blackcurrant beverage or a matched placebo with a high-fat meal. The beverage had a quantified anthocyanin profile. Researchers measured selected vascular and haemostasis markers over six hours. The exact beverage, meal, participant group and acute protocol form the evidence unit. The result should not be applied automatically to a different juice, concentrate, powder or capsule.

Juice transfer decision: reasonable only when the beverage composition, concentration or dilution, serving volume and study conditions are close. Anthocyanin retention during processing does not itself prove effectiveness in people.

Powder passport

Sujon powder trial: A randomised crossover study used 6 g per day of Sujon New Zealand blackcurrant powder for seven days in 10 trained triathletes. Researchers measured cardiovascular responses during incremental cycling. The conference report did not clearly identify whether the powder was whole fruit, juice solids, pomace or another fraction, and it did not provide a complete active-compound specification in the abstract. No significant differences were reported for the measured responses at the tested exercise intensities.

Powder transfer decision: limited when the starting material and active profile are missing. The word powder is not enough to connect that protocol to every whole blackcurrant powder, juice powder or pomace powder.

Extract passport

Acute uptake study: Twenty healthy adults consumed one 300 mg CurraNZ New Zealand blackcurrant extract capsule providing 105 mg of anthocyanins after an overnight fast. Blood samples were collected for six hours to measure selected phenolic metabolites. The plant part was not clearly stated in the accessible abstract. This is evidence for that proprietary extract, dose and sampling protocol, not for every blackcurrant capsule.

Defined anthocyanin-rich extract protocol: A five-week placebo-controlled study used a New Zealand blackcurrant anthocyanin extract described as 34 per cent anthocyanins with four dominant glycosides disclosed. The dose supplied in capsules was adjusted to body weight at 3.2 mg of total anthocyanins per kg. Thirty-four healthy adults completed the protocol, which included a standardised rowing session and measurement of selected oxidative-stress, inflammatory and immune markers. The publication did not establish interchangeability with other extracts, and the plant part was not clearly identified in the methods available.

Extract transfer decision: stronger only when the extract identity, plant part, active profile, serving basis, participant group and protocol are sufficiently close. A proprietary research ingredient should not be treated as a generic category.

What the broader evidence says about variation

A 2026 systematic review of New Zealand blackcurrant supplementation and sport performance included 21 randomised crossover trials. It reported variation in dose, study design, exercise model and measured outcomes. That variation is the point here: a review can summarise a field, but it does not make unlike preparations interchangeable. Results depend on the form and protocol studied.

The current Kiwi Superfoods Blackcurrant Skin Extract product page positions the product as NZ-grown blackcurrant skin extract supplied in capsules. The formula includes vitamin C. The current usage direction states that adults take two capsules daily, with or without food.

The live page contains inconsistent quantity wording. For that reason, this guide does not reproduce exact values for total extract weight, anthocyanin content, vitamin C content or fresh-fruit equivalent. Those figures should come from an approved physical label or a confirmed product specification.

This product should be compared with extract research only when the berry part, extract identity, active profile, serving basis and study protocol are sufficiently matched. It should not be described as equivalent to CurraNZ or another proprietary preparation unless evidence establishes that match. The evidence boundary: six numbers that answer different questions

Blackcurrant labels often place several large numbers close together. They are not interchangeable measurements.

  • Total extract weight tells you the mass of extract, not the anthocyanin amount.
  • Fresh-fruit equivalent is a conversion claim based on a stated or unstated ratio. It does not identify the final active profile.
  • Standardisation percentage describes the proportion of a chosen marker, provided the marker and testing basis are clear.
