Can You Take Prebiotics and Probiotics Together? Where Kiwifruit Fits

You have a probiotic bottle in the cupboard. You remember to take it most days, and now you keep hearing that a prebiotic should sit beside it. Is that genuinely useful, or just another supplement to buy?

For many generally healthy adults, prebiotics and probiotics can be taken as part of the same day. But taking both is not automatically better, and you do not have to swallow them together. What matters is what each product contains, how you tolerate it and the directions on each label.

If you are curious about a New Zealand-grown option, our Kiwifruit Extract Prebiotic + Enzyme Formula is worth a closer look. It offers a prebiotic ingredient from gold kiwifruit alongside a separate green kiwifruit enzyme extract, rather than giving you another probiotic.

Your probiotic has a job already. What would adding a prebiotic change?

Think about why you chose your probiotic in the first place. Perhaps someone suggested a particular strain. A probiotic supplies live microorganisms, and the details matter. Different strains have different research, so probiotic bottles are not interchangeable.

A prebiotic does something else. Instead of adding live microorganisms, it provides material that certain microbes can use. Some of those microbes are already living in your gut. This is the interesting part if you are thinking about adding a prebiotic: you are considering support for your existing microbial community, not simply adding more cultures.

That does not mean a prebiotic automatically feeds the exact strains in your probiotic capsule. Different microorganisms use different materials, and the evidence needs to match the ingredients involved. They have distinct roles, but they are not necessarily a matched pair.

You may also see the word synbiotic on gut supplement labels. It has a specific scientific meaning and needs evidence for the combined formulation. Taking one probiotic and one prebiotic from separate bottles does not automatically make a clinically established synbiotic.

Want a simple refresher on the different jobs? We have explained prebiotics, probiotics and digestive enzymes separately, so we can stay focused here on what it means to add a second product.

Do they need to go down together?

No. There is no general rule that a prebiotic and probiotic must be taken in the same mouthful, at the same meal or even at the same time of day to be useful. Taking them on the same day can be perfectly practical, provided both products are suitable for you.

Follow your probiotic's own directions for timing, food and storage. Some products have specific instructions, and it is better to use those than to follow a blanket rule from social media.

Our Kiwifruit Extract is straightforward: two capsules a day with water, with or without food. Breakfast may be a convenient time for ours. If your probiotic calls for a different time, there is no need to move it just to match the kiwifruit capsules.

For a closer look at meals and time of day, see our prebiotic timing guide. You do not need to turn your day into a supplement timetable.

What might you notice when you add another supplement?

Adding a prebiotic is not always something you can feel straight away. You may notice very little, or you may find that your digestion feels different as your gut adjusts to an additional ingredient. Gas, bloating or changes in bowel habits are possible with some prebiotic products, and probiotics themselves can also cause digestive side effects for some people.

That is one good reason not to start three new gut products on the same morning. If everything changes at once, it becomes difficult to tell which product suits you and which one may be causing discomfort. Pay attention to how you feel, use the labelled serving and reassess.

If you eat a varied diet with plenty of plant foods and are happy with your probiotic, you may not need anything extra. But a named prebiotic ingredient with clear serving amounts may be worth exploring.

If discomfort is persistent, getting worse or unusual for you, talk with a pharmacist or GP rather than trying to solve it by piling on more supplements.

What We Put in the Capsule When You Already Have a Probiotic

We like that our NZ-grown Kiwifruit Extract formula has a clear identity. It is not another bottle of live cultures. We bring together two named kiwifruit ingredients that do different jobs, with the amounts plainly stated.

The gold part is Livaux, a New Zealand-grown gold kiwifruit powder that we use as the prebiotic component. Each capsule provides 300 mg of Livaux. Take the two-capsule daily serving and that becomes 600 mg of Livaux.

There is a good reason we are interested in this ingredient. In a 2025 human study, participants took 600 mg of Livaux daily for 28 days. The researchers reported changes in certain gut bacteria, including Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, along with some digestive measures. It is useful ingredient research, but it is important to keep its scope clear: the study tested Livaux, not our finished formula and not Livaux combined with a separate probiotic. Matching that studied ingredient amount is worth noting; it is not a promise that everyone will notice the same result.

The green part is OxiFend, our New Zealand-grown green kiwifruit enzyme extract. Each capsule supplies 250 mg, so the daily serving provides 500 mg of OxiFend. It contributes actinidin, an enzyme involved in breaking down proteins. Our two-capsule serving declares 12,500 CDU of actinidin activity. Those are enzyme activity units, not a probiotic count.

We have paired the gold prebiotic ingredient with the separate green enzyme component so you can explore both in one measured capsule formula. You are not buying another set of probiotic strains, and we do not claim that our finished formula has been clinically shown to work in synergy with your existing probiotic.

Each bottle contains 60 vegetarian capsules, or 30 daily servings. It is a product of New Zealand, labelled gluten free and suitable for vegetarians. For us, the appeal is simple: named NZ-grown ingredients, a clearly measured serving and no confusion about whether the product contains live probiotics. It does not.

If you already take a probiotic, where does our kiwifruit formula fit?

Imagine your usual weekday. You take your probiotic as directed before leaving for work. You have been thinking about a prebiotic, but you do not want to replace a product you already know how to use. If our kiwifruit formula is suitable for you, you can keep following your probiotic label and take our two capsules daily with a glass of water, with or without food.

There is no special pairing trick. You do not need to open capsules or change the time of your probiotic to make the two products meet in your stomach. Our formula gives you the measured Livaux gold kiwifruit prebiotic ingredient plus OxiFend green kiwifruit enzyme extract in one serving.

Before adding it, turn your probiotic bottle around. Some probiotics already contain a prebiotic ingredient such as inulin or another type of fermentable fibre. If yours does, check what you are already taking and how well you tolerate it. Our formula may still interest you because of its particular gold-and-green ingredients, but there is no automatic need for a second prebiotic.

We also encourage you to think about the bigger picture. A capsule can complement your food choices, but it does not replace fibre-rich foods, fruit, vegetables and the rest of a balanced diet. If you want to explore our wider approach to everyday gut care, visit our Gut Health Reset page.

A quick safety note: Our formula contains kiwifruit, so do not take it if you have a kiwifruit allergy. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, seek professional health advice before taking it. Speak with a pharmacist or GP before combining supplements if you have a weakened immune system, a significant health condition, take medicines or have ongoing digestive symptoms. Always follow both product labels.

Common questions

Can you take prebiotics and probiotics at the same time?

For many generally healthy adults, yes. They can be taken on the same day and do not need to be swallowed together. Follow each product's label and check that both are suitable for you.

Do prebiotics always feed the probiotic strains in my capsule?

No. A prebiotic is used by certain microorganisms, often ones already living in your gut. You cannot assume it feeds every strain listed on your probiotic bottle.

Is Kiwifruit Extract a probiotic or a synbiotic?

Neither. Our Kiwifruit Extract contains Livaux gold kiwifruit prebiotic powder and OxiFend green kiwifruit enzyme extract. It contains no live probiotic microorganisms and has not been clinically established as a synbiotic with a separate probiotic.

What if my probiotic already contains a prebiotic?

Check the ingredients and serving amounts before adding another. You may already be getting a prebiotic component, and extra ingredients may affect your digestive comfort.

Can I take Kiwi Superfoods Kiwifruit Extract with food?

Yes. Take two capsules daily with a glass of water, with or without food. Follow your probiotic's own directions separately.

Who should ask for advice before taking both?

Ask a pharmacist or GP if you have a weakened immune system, significant health concerns, take medicines or have persistent digestive symptoms. Seek professional health advice during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and avoid our formula if you have a kiwifruit allergy.

Next steps

That probiotic bottle in your cupboard does not automatically need a partner. But if you have been asking whether a prebiotic could add something different, now you know what to look for: a named ingredient, a clear serving and a purpose that is not simply another dose of live cultures.

Our Kiwifruit Extract Prebiotic + Enzyme Formula gives you a thoughtful NZ-grown option. With 600 mg Livaux gold kiwifruit powder and 500 mg OxiFend green kiwifruit enzyme extract per daily serving, you can explore prebiotic and protein-digesting enzyme ingredients together in one convenient formula. Take a look at the ingredients and directions, and see whether it deserves a place beside your existing probiotic.
